I took Melanie in yesterday afternoon and shes no longer with us. She went downhill very quickly in the past few days. She had stopped eating, but then started again only to stop a day later. She stopped drinking yesterday and was having trouble walking. It seemed like she was starting to shut herself down and wanted to leave. It was a difficult decision, but the right one because shes not suffering and thats the important thing.
I will miss Melanie very much. She was my favorite cat. When I got her and Scarlet almost 17 years ago she took to me right away, and followed me everywhere. She always cuddled in bed, and if for some reason I was late in getting to bed, she would very loudly let me know it was time to snuggle. I lied down with her for a few hours today to say good-bye. A beautiful, affectionate and very demanding cat. Her sisters and brother miss her, too. Sweet dreams my little girl.
Below, in the pictures with her sister Scarlet, she is the one on the left in both.

(899 posts)Having done this many times over the years with our beloved babies, I know it will take time for you to just remember the fun times, but you will. When we lost our latest one three years ago, we went immediately to the shelter and adopted 4 more babies to fill that terrible void and have never regretted it. His brother, who was left behind, was so grateful. He took charge of the new ones from day one -- it was a lovely bonding period for all. And, by the way, we adopted two older cats and two kittens and it made for a good mix. The two older ones, girls, had been in the shelter their entire lives but they adjusted to freedom and family life quickly.

(10,237 posts)Love is always a good and great thing. You obviously made each other very happy.
My favorite dog ever was my Spencer. for 12 years he was my best friend. When I had to put him to sleep in 1993 due to cancer and hip displasia, it was the hardest thing I'd done in my life to that point. His final physical movement was to put his face next to mine as I was telling him that I'd always love him. Almost 20 years later I'm still tearing up as I write this. My wife knows that when I go, I want her to scatter his ashes with mine.
But ypu know what? A year later I got my Daisy and I loved her, and still miss her, too.
Today it seems that I, along with my wife and son, am now a cat person. We have our 2 furry boys, Spirit & Oreo. I know that when it's time for them to go to kitty heaven we'll all be devastated.
I tell you this to let you know that I understand exactly how much your little 4 legged friends can be such a huge part of your life and your family. I truly believe that they love us as much as we love them.
Here are some sincere & heartfelt & for you. I know that you'll pass them on to Scarlet because you know that she misses her friend, too.
All the best to you and yours, joeybee12!
PEACE!

Are those Maine Coons ? One of mine is a Maine Coon / British Short Hair cross who weighs about 20lb.
Best wishes to you.
