(67,111 posts)not trying to take civil rights away and suppress people for no reason. Kansas is really getting freaky IMO.

(3,044 posts)But if I walk across the street I'm in Kansas. Yes, it is MHO that Missouri is more sane in that we at least have a democrat as govenor. We also have this - something I don't think Kansas has but I could be wrong.

(67,111 posts)governor is a big plus IMO. We made a large investment in Kansas some years ago, house and business, hired people and all, but we've sold that off now because at least to us Kansas, it seems, does not want anyone unless they are very republican and quite religious. We're very open minded, it's just changing so much in Kansas and the message we're getting is if you don't like it get out of Kansas.
I don't mean to sound like I'm bashing Kansas, many people are nice and areas are nice, but looking down the road we don't think we are wanted in Kansas and I guess anymore the feeling has become mutual. Today, I would never open a business in Kansas.

(20,411 posts)Lived in Topeka a couple of years - had to take the 1/2 hour trip to Lawrence couple times a month to maintain sanity.
Also lived in KCMo for a few years. Great city. Good sports, museums, food, etc. Best bbq going. And the folks on the Mo side are much more pleasant to be around than the Ks side. I have some relatives in the Overland Park area - try to avoid them at all times.

(67,111 posts)into a convenience store, for example, at a gas station the people are just more friendly and diverse. They don't seem all up tight.
OP is rated something like the 23rd most conservative city in the US. I've never had a problem there, but it just does not feel comfortable. When I'm in KCMo, the people just don't seem as judgmental or something.
I'm from the coasts, so Kansas is really really different. I don't need an ultra-liberal location like SFO, but just someplace where the people are a bit more diverse. Also, the state of Kansas government seems totally against one unless they really want to be republican and at least I think quite religious.
I'm a live and let live person, so I'm not fitting in well with the direction Kansas now seems to want to take, especially with Gov. Brownback. The message I get is to get out of Kansas if you don't like it. I find it eerie and uncomfortable.
Damn, I hate to sound sooo negative on Kansas, many people are very nice and areas are nice, but this has been building up a few years and it's really gotten to me.
Thanks for your reply.

(20,411 posts)Vern tried to ban drinking on airlines while flying over Kansas. That pretty much sums up the state.

(67,111 posts)republican enough. It's got to be more republican, like WTF, it's already about as red as red can be. It's getting freaky.

(29,503 posts)Was just there are a long weekend, and this was 25 years ago, lol, but it's pretty and a big commercial center, which tends to bring in outsiders with their new ideas and ways of living, moderating a region somewhat. You really need a car, though.
On the other hand, if you are prepared to pull up stakes and move, why don't you make it a REAL one that will last? Just move out to San Francisco or LA - somewhere with a big economy where you can get a decent job and which is as liberal as you can find...?

(67,111 posts)gay friendly cities it seems pretty expensive for housing. So, KCMO is closer and seems cheaper than most of the other cities to live.
