Related: About this forumA question inspired by church yesterday
The pastor of my church, who is caucasian like I am, stated that some gays and lesbians of color are calling themselves same sex loving instead of gay or lesbian since the latter terms were invented by caucasians. I had, to be honest, never heard of this before. So here is my question. Are you of color, and have you ever heard of that term being used instead of gay or lesbian.

"Gay? Homosexual? That's a white thing. We're just "on the down low!" heh

Edit: I see you have been a member for 9 years, no Recs in DU3, and have only posted 3 times. Can you explain?

(77 posts)don't know what recs in du3 are! Just not talkative. Long time reader of DU. Offensive? I am quoting what i remember hearing on (I believe) a 60 minutes program back when white people discovered the down low expression!

(45,319 posts)religious organizations and clerics (white, like me and the Rev) who tell lies to attempt to build walls between the GLBT and African American communities and so does the whole world, thanks to NOM? I wonder if he'd find that good enough reason to moderate, research, or use specific citations when he as a white, straight person takes it upon himself to so pontificate? Just a quesstion from the 'let your yes mean yes' passages. His question could appear to telegraph a message of division and racism, which I'm sappishly sure he does not intend....

(2,208 posts)As an aside, I'm a "white" person and I find the term "caucasian" to be offensive!
It was originally coined to mean "white and beautiful" as opposed to Mongolian which meant "brown and ugly". Also, my family is not from anywhere near the Caucasus region of Central Asia.
