(BEIRUT, LEBANON) A new confidential report published by a Spanish newspaper alleges that Israeli forces intentionally shelled a United Nations post in southern Lebanon, which left a Spanish UN peacekeeper killed on January 28.
The El Pais newspaper cited excerpts from a Spanish military report, which drew testimony from soldiers following the deadly incident, according to Agence France-Presse news agency.
36-year-old corporal Javier Soria Toleda was killed in the Israeli attack, which included intense shelling along Lebanons southern borders following a Hezbollah retaliation that left two Israeli soldiers killed.

Every time, (Israel) corrected the trajectory from Majidiye to the 4-28 (post), he said, referring to where the United Nations Interim Force Lebanon (UNIFIL) peacekeepers were stationed.

(10,650 posts)Israel hates the UN and doesn't want them watching while they do their dirty work. Same for journalists.

(6,171 posts)target a Spanish position. The Spanish wouldnt like it at all, and there might be consequences.
It would be beyond stupid.

(26,756 posts)What they would do is return fire when fired upon... and their opponents take advantage of this. They'll store weapons in a UN school so that when the weapons are destroyed, there's a news story about the IMF firing on a UN school. They'll launch rockets from right next to hotels so that any counter-battery fire might damage a hotel (and if it kills a civilian... so much the better!).
In this case, Hezbollah launched five anti-tank rockets at an unarmored IDF vehicle patrolling the border... from a position close to the UN location. For them... it's a win-win. If the IDF doesn't fire back (for fear of hitting the UN position), then the human shields were effective at protecting the attackers. If they do fire back, then a human shield might actually be killed and the world reads stories like this.

No, of course they wouldnt...
To me, the whole thing stinks. Its unlikely that the IDF missed by 500 meters. Its also unlikely that the IDF targeted the UN position.
