Anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism come in 57 varieties. Just ask Heinz.By: Tzvi Ben-Gedalyahu
Published: October 26th, 2014
The Heinz Foundation, headed by the wife of Heinz heiress Mrs. John Kerry, AKA Teresa Heinz Kerry, has been caught having donated $50,000 to the Conflict Kitchen, a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania soup kitchen that serves up food on a platter of anti-Zionism.
The soup kitchen recently came up with the gimmick of serving Palestinian food, whatever that means, in leaflets with quotes that support both terrorism and the idea that Israel should not exists.
The Heinz Foundation told the Washington Free Beacon, which scooped the story, that the opinions of Conflict Kitchen do not represent those of the Heinz Endowment. It also did not answer one way or the other if the fund would continue to dish out money to Conflict Kitchen.
A sample tasting of the soup kitchens propaganda includes, How can you compare Israeli F-16s, which are some of the best military planes in the world, to a few hundred homemade rockets? Youre pushing them to the absolute extreme. So what do you expect?

(59,504 posts)If you look at the local media, the story is rather different and far less negative. The RESTAURANT changes its menu to focus on different cuisines from countries in conflict. They have cultural events related to the cuisine. This changes regularly. When the Heinz Foundation contributed, the menu would have been a different culture. (Past menus were for Afghanistan, Iran, North Korea, Venezuela and Cuba. )
The co-director has a last name of Rubin. (http://conflictkitchen.org/about/ ) The conflict with some in the Jewish community is that the statement of purpose says countries the US is in conflict with -- and they note that we are not in conflict with Palestine. This is rather odd, because we do list Hamas as a terrorist group.
This concept seems interesting and it can actually help people gain respect for cultures that the US has been at odds with. If you consider that the first effort when a country goes to war against another is to demonize and make the other seem less human, then this is the opposite.
As to the current menu, if I were in Pittsburgh, I would definitely go out of my way to try the food here - and would wish to have tried ALL the previous menus.

(25,592 posts)you're happy about this? You are giving some money yourself? I am not sure as to why you scour the media and limit your posts for the most part to this subject. I daresay that if you behaved in this fashion towards Native Americans, African-Americans, Asians, or Filipinos, there would be some displeasure around here but I can see from various actions and inactions of the membership that this is permissible and accepted, so therefore, as a member for over ten years of this community, I accede to their wishes and accept your behavior as a community standard..
However, I wonder that if and when the Israelis vote the Likud Party out of power, your mission would be accomplished? Or would that be if they withdrew to the pre-1967 War borders? Would that be sufficient? Or would more be required of them? I am just curious as to what the motivation is for continuous posts involving not only Israelis but Orthodox Jews in America, rabbis who have deviated from the norm, and the like. Your posts are purpose-driven in my opinion and I just would like to know what is the purpose of choosing Israelis and Jews singularly is? I do not believe that I am alone in my querulous nature here.

(41,212 posts)is that the 'Conflict Kitchen' is by no means just about Palestine or Israel. In fact, the 'Conflict Kitchen' is much more broadly devoted to providing cuisine and information from countries which are in conflict with the USA; e.g. Venezuela, Afghanistan and even North Korea, as well as Palestine. It's an interesting idea which I support, though obviously with potential for misuse.
Scootaloo
(25,699 posts)Acknowledging anything about Palestinians is always antisemitic
it's sort of like how certain Christians believe acknowledging LGBT people, or advocating their rights, or the like, is inherently anti-Christian. They've invested themselves in the notion that hatred of gays is essentially and definitively christian. Well, then you have people like the author here, who believes that hating Arabs - especially Palestinians - is essentially and definitively Jewish, by the same reasoning. And so anyone who is even remotely "pro-arab" - say, serving food rooted in Palestine - is therefor anti-semitic.
Of course the irony there is that when you are saying that supporting Palestine is Jew-hate, and therefore that to hate Arabs is a core of Jewishness, you are the one engaging in antisemitism. If you're going to tell me that hostility and violence towards Arabs is essentially Jewish, I'm going to call you a jew-hating piece of shit - in addition to an arab-hating piece of shit.
Essentially, just the very idea of there being Palestinian food served, is a great affront, a despicable offense, something that a person needs to be torn down, beaten, skinned alive, then drawn and quartered over. That cuisine and information about other conflict zones is there as well is ignored - because you can't really stoke the same level of hyperventilating outrage over Colombian food as you can Palestinian food.
After all, US discourse over the conflict in Colombia isn't completely dominated by one faction of the conflict, is not categorized into purely moral white hats and black hats, and has no hyper-religious apocalyptic undertones (or overtones, as the case often is.)
As you see, even talking about Palestine brings out accusations of a person being, what, a "crypto-nazi" or something (I've got no doubts PCIntern will not answer my question to him, but none of us are fools here, honestly)
PCIntern
(25,592 posts)For the uninitiated, this is an attempt by my good friends above to goad me into doing something which I shall neither name nor shall I perform, in order to alert on the post and ultimately have me banned from DU after posting here for over ten years.
I would say that in answer to this that I have, over these years, had many more four and five star posts than these erudite, well-informed, and cogent individuals and do believe that since I, and quite frankly everyone else who posts here, have brought to the community some substance and perspective which is not unique but demonstrably different from many others here, that I wish to remain a small part of this Enterprise. In a different manner of speaking, I am not so stupid or ignorant to fall into this trap set by these delightful folks of whose opinions I possess the utmost respect.
Scootaloo
(25,699 posts)Answering my question above would get you banned? Wow. Either you're implying something way beyond what i think you are, or you don't know how banning on DU works
No, it's just an attempt to understand just what you're accusing Purveyor of. becuase the accusation is clearly there;
I'll be surprised if you tell me you think that's particularly subtle, but, I just wanna make sure i understand what you're saying. if you're saying something that would get you banned, well, maybe it is best to keep your mouth (er, fingers) shut.

(6,068 posts)middle Eastern restaurants. Pretty much calling yourself a Palestinian, at the very least, will get you the fine tooth comb treatment until they find something (anything) that entitles them to cry anti-semitism.
In this case, an independent eatery (incidentally led by a Jewish manager) tangentially funded by an endowment with a nominal connection to the wife of an American politician, has served food, including one item of food which at one point in time included a wrapper which displayed some political commentary on the Israeli-Palestinian dispute, which while demonstrably not anti-semitic was nevertheless contentious.
And that is enough to let slip the dogs of war.
A bit like the Curb your Enthusiasm episode where one character looks at the "freedom for Palestine" poster and says "that is so anti-semitic". Except that they weren't joking then and aren't joking now.

Alternatively, you can simply call your restaurant "Israeli". Although the food looks pretty much Palestinian. Just don't order in Arabic, whatever you do.
