Settlers torch mosque near Nablus

NABLUS (Ma'an) -- Israeli settlers set fire to a mosque in the Nablus-area village of Aqraba overnight, locals said.

Ghassan Daghlas, a Palestinian official who monitors settlement activity, told Ma'an that a group of settlers broke the doors and windows of the Abu Baker al-Saddiq mosque and vandalized the interior with racist slogans.

The settlers then set fire to part of the mosque before being chased away by Palestinian villagers.

Locals managed to extinguish the fire and prevent it from burning down the whole mosque.

2. President Rivlin slams 'price tag' attack on mosque as terror

President Reuven Rivlin slammed a 'price tag' attack on a mosque in the West Bank as "terror" Sunday, after unknown assailants set fire to a mosque and spray painted the words "price tag Tapuach" nearby in the Palestinian town of Aqraba not far from Nablus.

"Burning holy places of worship is terror and it needs to be taken care of like terror, regardless of whether it was perpetrated for nationalistic, racial or religious motives. In order to deal with this problem – we must first acknowledge the seriousness of the problem."

In the past Israel has been reluctant to describe such acts as "terror" fearing the comparison would cheapen the acts of terrors perpetrated by Palestinians, and thus the strong wording of Rivlin's condemnation is unique.

“We cannot continue to regard incidents like these as marginal. Rather, we must uproot them. All those who remain silent on such deeds are laying the ground for the next such attack.

“We must remember that, if we do not act decisively, we will all pay the ‘price tag’," the president said.

Burning holy places is terrorism, and should be treated as terrorism — whether the crime was racially, religiously or nationalistically motivated We cannot continue to regard incidents like these as marginal. Rather, we must uproot them.

Glad he came out with such a clear and firm statement condemning this criminal action.
