Israel approves Intel plan to invest $6 billion in Jewish state

(JNS.org) The Israeli finance and economy ministries on Monday approved a plan by Intel to invest $6 billion in upgrading its chip-

manufacturing plant in Israel, marking the largest-ever single international investment in the Jewish state.

“Intel’s investment is a strategic asset for Israel’s industry,” Finance Minister Yair Lapid said, Reuters reported. “This is the biggest

investment by a foreign company ever in Israel and is further proof that Israel is at the forefront of technology and innovation.”

5. What does that have to do with the reasons a private corporation moves production offshore?

Also, the US's closes allies are UK and Canada. Israel is a lot closer than China, though, you're right about that.

7. Still, closeness of allies has nothing to do with private corporations offshoring.

The reason corporations move production offshore is because it's cheaper there. That's all they care about.

9. This is not to deny that Israel is a leader in technology.

Israel has excellent research universities. They have more scientific Nobel laureates per capita than the US (and they've only been around for about half the lifetime of the Nobel prize). There's also a lot of scientific collaboration between Israel and the US -- for example the new Cornell-Technion technology institute to be built in NYC.

But let's not exaggerate the myth of the dumb American worker. Intel (and Apple and the rest) could obviously manufacture their chips and devices in the US if the wanted to. They move things offshore because it costs less.

Companies like Intel don't care about Israel's human rights abuses any more than Apple does about China's, that's definitely true.

When a conservative-leaning publication like economist says BDS is "gathering weight" and "turning mainstream", I'm not so quick to dismiss it. But who knows how it will turn out.

Dave is just trying to imply you are "disloyal to the party" if you disagree with him about something.
