BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Israel is willing to agree to the rebuilding of the Gaza Strip in exchange for the disarmament of militant groups there, an official said Tuesday.Ofer Gendelman told Maan that the Israeli government linked the rebuilding of Gaza with disarming factions in the coastal enclave.
Gendelman said that Israel was interested in achieving a lasting ceasefire, but he insisted that it was dependent on Hamas' respect of the current 72-hour truce.
The Israeli assault in Gaza has caused severe damage to the infrastructure in Gaza. Over 10,000 houses, government buildings, universities, mosques, and schools were damaged in a month-long assault.

(25,699 posts)My thought is, this is essential when you're talking about "rebuilding" a territory. the Marshall Plan didn't just glue the buildigns back together, it created an economic situation where the enemy - the Nazis - simply couldn't regain power.
Make Palestine wealthy and healthy and nobody's ever going to want to sign on with nutbags like Hamas.

Hamas can no more be defeated militarily than the crips or MS-13. Even if something happened to topple their current supremacy, someoen else would just take the turf and carry on as normal. The only way to defeat these organizations is to strike at the roots - and the roots here are poverty, dissociation, and desperation.

(26,760 posts)Obviously... it depends on whether or not a deal is reached along the lines of what is currently being discussed.
Take a look at my post from earlier.
They're talking about letting the Palestinian Authority be responsible for the borders and managing the rebuilding efforts - in exchange for the PA being responsible for disarming Hamas.
Of course... Hamas doesn't want to be disarmed and doesn't want someone else dishing out reconstruction benefits for political power. So we'll have to see.

(14,851 posts)Of course Hamas will reject it they don't really care about the Palestinians , they built these tunnels to attack Israel and never allowed even 1 child bomb shelter within their extensive tunnel network .
So many children could of been saved.
Fucking cowards.

(19,820 posts)nice they are going to ALLOW them. If thats all Israel has to offer is allow them to rebuild what Israel destroyed, they had better keep sleeping with their eyes open.

(5,586 posts)Israel would open the borders. Perhaps even let them have / open the port.
There would probably have to be international monitors to ensure Hamas and Islamic Jihad actually disarmed. Would be a good first step towards a lasting peace agreement IMO.
