As scenes of carnage fill the screen with news of another grotesque Israeli attack on a UN school this morning the thought crossed my mind, This could not be, so soon after, it must be old footage. But no, it is all too real and has happened again. Ten people have been killed and dozens more injured when the deadly strike hit a street just outside of the gates of the school this morning in Rafah.
State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki called for an investigation, and stated the U.S. was appalled at the disgraceful shelling and urged Israel to do more to prevent civilian casualties.
UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon called the attack criminal and a moral outrage but Im failing to grasp how this will prevent another incident of gross civilian human slaughter from reoccurring in the following days.
---
In a statement, Ban called on those responsible for the gross violation of international humanitarian law to be held accountable. He said the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) have been repeatedly informed of the location of these sites.

"...the deadly strike hit a street just outside of the gates of the school"
The target was three Islamic Jihad militants who were riding in a vehicle on a street just outside the school.
That being said, it is offensive and outrageous that Israel would have no problem attacking a target that was so close to a school housing civilians.

We probably did it in Afghanistan and Iraq.
War should be avoided.
Terrorism leads to war and should not be used to achieve political goals.
Nor should one people build tunnels under the land of another people.

Also it's telling that you try defend Israel with the carnage wrought in Iraq and Afghanistan. What is this from "Israel supporters" that they believe "the US did it in iraq" makes it a good idea, an excusable thing, for Israel to do it in Gaza? It's truly bizarre.

(25,699 posts)That Israel is able to track three Islamic Jihad guys, in a moving vehicle, and pinpoint them with artillery, and just happened to time the strike right there, right then. Curiouser that this is the story for every single one of these strikes
Know what I think?
I don't think there really are "targets" - Not this time, and not in general anymore. I think Israel is just chucking shells at wherever it sees people, and using this "there was a guy! For reals!" story to try to fig-leaf its wanton and undirected violence against a civilian populace.
Because that is a big pile of happenstance with every one of these instances.
