ANKARA, Turkey (AP) Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accused Israel of "barbarism that surpasses Hitler" during its ground invasion of Gaza.
Erdogan accused Israel of using disproportionate force in Gaza and said the operation there has derailed efforts to normalize Turkish-Israeli ties. Those soured after Israel's 2010 raid on an aid ship which killed eight Turks and a Turkish-American.
Erdogan spoke in a campaign speech Saturday in the Black Sea port city of Ordu. He is running for the presidency in elections next month.
He has been speaking out strongly against Israel during its offensive against Hamas militants in Gaza, which has killed more than 300 Palestinians.

(6,829 posts)the PM of Turkey, but he is planning on running for president of Turkey, in hopes of turning what is currently a ceremonial role, in to a very strong, near dictatorial one.

(35,320 posts)He's also providing ferries to Russia to help with Crimea. The ferries they have have been used for military equipment and personnel so much that it's created a crimp in getting tourists and food to the peninsula. (Greece and Italy are also providing ferries.)
Then again, we have some of the first "western" flights to Crimea. As of today, Turkey's flying.
After all the bravado standing up for the Tatars, it's down to this. Even as Tatars are questioned and asked if they are loyal to Russia or if they're going to revert to some misguided loyalty to their majlis, which is how they autonomously self-governed under Ukrainian "rule." After they've been told their language is unwelcomed in the media, esp. on the air (since it's offensive). After they've been fined and their majlis has been fined repeatedly for suggesting more autonomy from Russia. And let's not forget the attempt to send in Tatars with the "right Islam" from elsewhere in Russia to reteach "Russian Islam" to the Tatars. Seriously, you can't make this crap up.
Russia's even floating rumors that Turkey's seriously considering joining the Customs Union and joining the "Russian world."
Erdogan probably sees a certain similarity and common bond there.

(6,068 posts)He runs a military occupation of northern Cyprus with far less general fuckupery than Israel manages in the west bank, has managed to get the US to refrain from recognizing the Armenian genocide, has skillfully managed the Russian relationship with the Caucasus and has remained essential to the interests of the US while at the same time not sacrificing its relationship with the Arabs or Iran. Also managed to get netanyahu to apologise for the Marmara incident.
About the only blot on his card is his failure to advance relationships with the EU, but given how much of a shit sandwich that turned out to be he probably dodged a bullet anyway.
