Sinai-based militants claim rocket attack on Israel

CAIRO Sat Feb 1, 2014 5:56am EST

(Reuters) - A Sinai-based militant group inspired by al Qaeda, Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis, claimed responsibility on Saturday for a failed rocket attack on Israel's Red Sea resort city Eilat a day earlier.

Israel's Iron Dome missile defence system on Friday shot down a rocket fired in the direction of Eilat, an occasional target of militants in Egypt's lawless Sinai peninsula.

"Jews, know that nothing will stop us fighting you," Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis said in a statement published on the Internet.

The 1978 treaty between Egypt and Israel prohibits Egyptian military from maneuvering in the Sinai without Israeli clearance. One might wonder what amount of bourbon it took to get Sadat to agree to this, but there it is.

As a direct result, the sinai is effectively lawless. Egypt cannot exert pressure or control in the territory.

As a direct result of that, shit like this happens.

Yet Israel even as recently as 2012, regarded any Egyptian attempt to establish law and order in the Sinai as a military provocation and even threatened military response.

Conclusion: Israel wants to keep the Sinai as a terrorist preserve.
