MISHOR ADUMIM, WEST BANK If he could turn back the clock, SodaStream CEO Daniel Birnbaum would never have established a production plant on an Israeli Jewish settlement in the occupied West Bank. In fact, he said, its location has turned out to be a pain in the ass.
Were here because were here for historical reasons, Birnbaum told the Forward in an exclusive interview Tuesday, when asked about the public row that has erupted over the controversial location of his companys main facility.
The decision to locate SodaStreams now contentious plant in this industrial park within the boundaries of the West Bank settlement Maale Adumim, about 10 minutes outside of Jerusalem, did in fact predate Birnbaums arrival. It was a choice made by company founder Peter Weissburgh, back in the 1990s, long before SodaStream was taken over by the Fortismo Capital Fund, it current owners, who appointed Birnbaum to head the firm in 2007.
But though he wouldnt have opened the factory at its current site, Birnbaum said that its presence here is now a reality, and he wont bow to political pressure to close it even though the company is about to open a huge new plant in the Negev, within Israels internationally-recognized boundaries, which will replicate all functions of the West Bank plant, and dwarf it.

(14,851 posts)That is why BDS loves this story.

(30,099 posts)It would not matter who represented SodaStream...even if she had refused to represent them.
No help would have come to the Palestinians to pressure Israel to accept a fair agreement.

(14,851 posts)It matters to the BDS crowd and you are correct they don't give a damn about a fair agreement for the Palestinians . That's not part of their Raison d'être.
Jefferson23
(30,099 posts)love about this story? The BDS movement is invested in the Palestinians receiving
a viable state..but it is also a somewhat fractured movement regarding
leadership.
Imo, BDS is not going to change anything to give the Palestinians a fair settlement.
The movement has been derailed, for one, by their politics, but most important, by
Kerry.
The US handed a framework to Bibi, one that contains, from what I have read, giving
him pretty much everything...but now Bibi wants more. BDS does not have the power
to change that, nor do they have the power of influence to change Abbas.
The United States wants a deal, and it looks like they will get it...Palestinians be damned.

(34,648 posts)Thanks Dave. It makes more sense why she'd be involved in representing Soda Stream now. Must be a difficult position to be in for her. I've always thought she was so beautiful, and a great actress. Nice eyes.

Perhaps Scoot's analysis makes some sense.
On edit: I'm sure some will use her religion for their own partisan purposes.

(14,851 posts)Same as if you became Gazan .You live long enough within the community you assimilate completely and soon your part of a 3 State Solution , Gaza , Israel and the West Bank .
Go ask your question in the Jewish Group where it belongs .

Each group is completely identical to its other entity in a fore mentioned countries?
Is that what you are implying? I'm pretty damn sure that most people are individuals first, and not clone-ish as you might suggest.
But I noticed something again. You switched from arguing about religious identity (Jewish) as "ethnicity a people a nation" to defining Regions again: Gaza, Israel and the West Bank.
You also did that with Russia and a Baltic State.
You really need to think through what you are writing before jotting it down in I/P.

(14,851 posts)I have found that culturally Jewish People are very similar in Argentina as they are in Australia or France.
Hamas doesn't differentiate either .
Take this discussion to the Jewish Group and test the tolerance there for your "definitions" of Jews as a people.

Israel is The Jewish State and that has nothing to do with religion... Whatsoever .
Myself I am an atheist anyway I hold no religious views .

(12,606 posts)My concern in I/P is with Israeli / Palestinian matters, and not if Scarlett Johansson is Jewish.
Now I did mention that there are probably some that will use her Jewish Identity for partisan purposes, and I believe that you fit comfortably into the category without the need for assistance.
So the next time you are in I/P and bring up a Jewish matter perhaps it is you that should take your own advice and take the discussion to the Jewish Group...instead of using I/P as your personal soapbox.
