Knesset committee approves bill to annex Jordan Valley

A Knesset committee of government ministers has approved a bill to annex the Jordan Valley, which would allow Jews to remain there under a peace treaty with the Palestinians.

The Ministerial Committee on Legislation passed the bill Sunday by a vote of 8 to 3. The ministers supporting the bill came from the Likud, Yisrael Beiteinu and the Jewish Home parties.

The bill, proposed by Miri Regev of the Likud Party, was opposed by Finance Minister Yair Lapid, head of the Yesh Atid Party and Science and Technology Minister Jacob Perry of Yesh Atid, as well as Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, head of the HaTnuah Party. The bill also is opposed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The bill would apply Israeli law to the region, which is currently considered a captured territory. A similar bill annexed the Golan Heights in 1981. The bill is designed to prevent an Israeli withdrawal from the Jordan Valley when a peace deal with the Palestinians is achieved.

Though apparently the New York Post is viewed as a credible source, as one of the torrent of OPs posted yesterday was an article from that stinky RW source

10. Netanyahu warned against Jordan Valley annexation bill prior to vote

** at this time.

All Likud ministers on committee voted to annex settlements in Jordan Valley despite PM's warning that this move could hurt Israel's standing in peace talks.
By Barak Ravid | Dec. 29, 2013 | 11:45 PM

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Likud ministers on Sunday morning aganist voting for a bill to annex Jordan Valley settlements, saying such a move could be perceived as provocative and might harm Israel.

According to a minister present at the closed meeting, Netanyahu said discussing MK Miri Regev’s bill to annex the Jordan Valley at this time might be considered “outrageous” and even cause damage.

The minister told Haaretz that though Netanyahu did not ask his party to vote against the bill, he advised against raising the issue of annexation at this time.

The minister added that Netanyahu told the ministers that peace talks were not nearing completion, and therefore there was no room for such moves, and that any decisions that affect the peace process should go through the government and not through independent legislation by individual members of Knesset.

Hours after the closed Likud meeting, the Ministerial Committee for Legislation convened, and, despite Netanyahu's warning, all Likud ministers in the committee voted for Regev's bill. The bill passed the committee vote 8-3.

Following the vote, Justice Minister Tzipi Livni and Science and Technology Minister Jacob Perry appealed the vote. Now, this hot potato will return to Netanyahu, who will have to find a way to freeze the bill and prevent it from reaching the Knesset plenum, where the government would vote on the issue.

I'm pretty sure that the PA has made that clear to the Israelis, and that they would walk if it passes. If Netanyahu is against it, then I think it is unlikely to pass. I'm more concerned about the negative message it sends, just by the Knesset considering it.

Perhaps they believe that they can continue to tell the world to fuck off. Well if they want to then they can do it without our tax dollars and act like every other tin-pot asshole out there.

Minister Livni said during the meeting: "I have no respect for the proposal and its backers who are weakening themselves. By supporting this bill you are essentially giving up on the government's authority to make decisions on important issues."

The justice minister added she was surprised that bills regarding tax benefits are postponed to allow further debates, and "a proposal that is meant to harm Israeli interests" is approved so quickly.

of other peoples. The Romans did it in Palestine, the Europeans did it in the Crusades, the British did it in India, the Germans did it during the early 20th century, and lost what they tried to take by force.

Now the Israelis are going to try the same nonsense?

Good luck, Israel.
