Israeli government branded 'hypocrites' for rejecting same-sex marriage equality

Members of Israel's coalition government have been branded 'hypocrites' after they rejected a bill to legalize gay marriage.

The Knesset, which is responsible for passing all laws in the middle-eastern country, today (16 May) threw out legislation put forward by Nitzan Horowitz, of the left-wing Meretz party, which would allow same-sex as well as inter-faith couples to wed.

Gay Middle East editor in Israel, Shabi Gatenio, said the government has been rejecting gay rights for decades and is not surprised by today's decision.

Speaking to Gay Star News, he said: 'It is a hypocrisy that this government, this prime minister and foreign minister have objected to every pro-gay law we have wanted to pass but are flagging up its positive record on gay rights abroad.'

Dan Littauer, executive editor of Gay Middle East, told GSN that progress in LGBT rights in the state of Israel has almost universally come through the higher courts, with very little coming from government policy or legislation.

He said: 'The Israeli government has done very little for LGBT rights and used propaganda to present itself as a progressive country.

'No government in Israel has legislated for marriage equality. The current government has extreme religious right-wing elements which are known to be actively homophobic and oppose any LGBT legislation.'

Country that like most other western countries ( Australia and USA still have a long way to go ) have been forced to make changes through the courts.

Gay marriage is recognized in Israel if it was performed outside the country as is gay adoption by 2 men .( Australian gays want )

Good for Meretz for furthering LGBT rights in a country whose neighbors recently introduced "medical testing" to ban LGBT persons from entering their country and would hang kill stone or imprison anybody born that way.

Israel still has a long way to go. But not as bad as Australia ...

Thank God for the courts in these countries with shameful right wing homophobic governments like that one in Israel and also Canada. The courts took gay progressive Canada ( as opposed to their government ) out of the " Middle Ages for Gays"and they are doing the same in the Gay Progressive country of Israel .

There is widespread support for gay marriage in the Labor caucus in Australia. In fact, most people believe that if the conservative parties allowed a conscience vote on the issue in the same way that Labor now does, that a bill to support gay marriage would pass.

Prior to the election, the conservative parties indicated that, in fact, they would be allowing a conscience vote, although they have backpedaled slightly from that.

At the same time, the ACT has passed its own gay marriage bill and the NSW govt is set to do the same.

Gay marriage is recognized in Israel if it was performed outside the country as is gay adoption by 2 men .( Australian gays want )

In and of itself that means nothing. To the extent that gay men in Israel can get married, it is only because good Christian nations allow them to do so. There is no ability to get married within Israel. However, the Border Crossings Administration will change the persons status to "married" on their ID registry.

Thats all they will do. In fact until recently there was no prospect of gays being able to divorce in Israel. There is still some doubt as to whether this is possible, as, under the law, the rabbinical courts have a monopoly in the case of divorce between two Jews, and the rabbinical courts will not accept applications for gay divorce. The family court have issued one gay divorce to date, but this was the Court at first instance, so their decision is not binding on other courts.

Frankly, such stupid statements make me question your bona fides.

Until the federal government does that's all it remains in Australia ... A tiny little baby step..it certainly is not enough and Australia will remain a backwater "provincial " Gay backward country until such time .

Certainly I can attest that the Australian street is anything but gay progressive ...
I have personally witnessed this..
Oxford street in Sydney excluded

5. The Federal Government doesn't record marriages
Tue Oct 8, 2013, 09:00 PM

marriages in all states are recorded separately by the Registry of Births Deaths and Marriages in each individual state, even though currently, marriages are performed pursuant to the federal Marriage Act.

Therefore, a same-sex marriage celebrated in New South Wales will be RECORDED IN EXACTLY THE SAME WAY as a heterosexual marriage that takes place in New South Wales. In neither case is the federal government explicitly called upon to recognise either marriage.

The federal Marriage Act only dates back to 1961. Prior to this all marriages were celebrated pursuant to state laws. Your parents probably married pursuant to these laws. Notwithstanding this, your parents' marriage is every bit as much a marriage as those marriages under the federal Act post-1961. Divorce of such marriages is conducted in the exact same way.

Virtually every gay person that I know is intimately familiar with all of these facts, and they all recognise the significance of New South Wales legislating with respect to gay marriage. You seem strangely oblivious to all of this.

I ask again, are you for real? I don't think I have ever seen you comment on the GLBT board or in respect of any gay issues that don't have to do with Israel.

For us gays nothing but complete 100% equality is.

At least in Israel gay and heterosexuals are discriminated against equally in that the Orthodox
fundie crowd in control of marriage do not allow anything except orthodox Jewish religious marriage and that has to change.

Australia hasn't quite come of age yet but the backward primitive cultures surrounding Israel that don't quite allow gay existence definitely require some social engineering and punishment in a major Gay way?

unless you think that people who got married prior to 1961 are discriminated against by having to marry pursuant to a State Act rather than a federal one, then your post makes no sense.

Obviously, its better that the federal act be changed, as it applies to the whole country. I can understand that there might be greater symbolic value in the federal Act being changed.

However, once NSW institutes gay marriage, an Israeli couple could come to Australia, get married in NSW, then return to Israel and have their marriage recognised by the Border Crossings administration as a legal marriage. Exactly how does this make Israel more progressive than Australia?

The fact is that Israel does not even have civil unions, and Israeli gays themselves have rejected the idea that Israel is a progressive country as government propaganda.

Do you think that you know better than they do?

Can you point me to a single instance where you have commented on gay issues that did not involve Israel?

Even one?

Lebanon bans two films in setback for tolerant image
Film on homosexuality and another on 'pleasure marriages' blocked from screening at Beirut film festival; critics take to local media and Web, but decision unlikely to be overturned, says festival director.
By Reuters | Oct. 7, 2013 | 8:43 PM |

Lebanon has banned the screening of a film about homosexuality and another on short-term "pleasure marriages" practiced in some Muslim communities, in a blow to its reputation as a bastion of tolerance in a deeply conservative region.

The films, which had been due to be shown at the Beirut International Film Festival that opened last week, were blocked by a government censorship committee, festival organizers said.

Confirming the bans, an Interior Ministry spokesman cited a Lebanese news report which attributed the decision to "obscene scenes of kissing between gay men, philandering, naked men and sexual intercourse between men" in one film and "sex scenes that offend public opinion and obscene language" in the other.
