Israel's secret weapon in 1973: Diaspora Jews

Just days after Ed Zifkin dropped out of Michigan State University to take the first flight he could to Israel, to volunteer after a surprise attack that became known as the Yom Kippur War, he was waking at 5 A.M. to head to the fields of a kibbutz near the Gaza border where he would climb on a tractor and plant wheat until the sun went down.

Forty years later, he still remembers the feel of the tractor’s clutch underfoot on those rolling fields marked with ravines. He was at Kibbutz Urim. Most of the men in the community were with their combat units in Sinai or on the Golan Heights. Together with a fellow Jewish American volunteer named Sam Stern, a dairy farmer from Connecticut, he worked up to 15 hours a day, six days a week, planting not only wheat but peas, potatoes, onion and melon in what was normally a large, busy agricultural kibbutz. Their one day off from the fields came Saturdays, when they milked cows.

“It was really the most meaningful period of my life,” said Zifkin, who now works in commercial real estate in Chicago. The entire kibbutz threw a party in Zifkin and Stern’s honor as they prepared to leave after several months volunteering, crediting them with helping keep the kibbutz’s agricultural operations afloat.

A "secret weapon" is one that the other side doesn't suspect or give enough importance to, and that has a significant effect on the battle. The toughness of the Egyptian infantry was a secret weapon. The ability of the Israelis to improvise an entire new doctrine and set of tactics in a few days was a secret weapon. Diaspora Jews certainly contributed, but secret? Not really. Decisive? No history of the war that I have ever read has mentioned them. They deserve some mention, but this is a bit over the top.

we had over 100 volunteers on our kibbutz from all over the world in 1973 , the majority were not Jewish .
some stayed for months after the war ended, some for years and some never left , some came and left and came back again for years , many relationships formed during this time and still survive 40 years on .
Many " sons and daughters of the kibbutz " married these non Jewish volunteers and moved to other countries .... many chose to stay .
On our kibbutz today we have three ex-volunteers from way back then who married and chose to stay , they became Israeli citizens and kibbutz members but did not convert ... their children are not classed as Jewish King_David......yet they have all served their country of birth .... so tell me King_David...who is more Israeli ...them or you ?

Your anecdotes are sweet...and I'm happy and proud that these immigrants were accepted and completely assimilated into Israeli society and it's fantastic their children are not singled out for any of that "us and them" attitudes ... Kol Hakavod.

And your views are not mainstream Israeli Culture..

You need get out and about in your country more and off your elitist kibbutz and talk with regular Israelis ... Perhaps Pelsar can help you with some suggestions ?

for a start , even though they were born here , because they are not classed as Jewish they cannot marry here unless they are willing to go through an orthodox conversion .

Lets not get into the ' should we die in battle ' bit and not be buried with our comrades ...or would you like to go there to King_David ?

And not your usual "it's all about where your born "attitude.

Embracing immigrants is a very worthy left wing attitude .

My grandparents were both born in Palestine ...where were yours born?

just like America and Canada ...with no special relevance or privileges to any " special " group .

In other words King_David , I would like to do away with the ' Law of Return ' ...thats one of the basic principles of post-zionism .

Grow it big....bigger than the current clan of Passé-Zionists, that all fit into an Aroma Café in Tel Aviv....

Get elected into a Majority party of Knesset, and then...

do away with The Law of Return.....

That would be Democracy in action....

Or alternatively mastermind a coup like they do in Egypt or Gaza....
