Israel to release 104 Palestinian prisoners

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has said that Israel will free 104 Palestinian prisoners to coincide with the resumption of long-stalled peace talks.

"I agreed to free 104 Palestinians in stages, after the start of negotiations and according to progress," he wrote on his official Facebook page on Saturday evening.

Israel's cabinet is expected to tackle the issue on Sunday, and decide whether to allow the release of 104 Palestinians currently in Israeli jails.

Seeking to assuage public qualms about freeing prisoners many of whom were convicted of killing Israelis, Netanyahu issued a statement on Saturday urging the support of Israelis for what he called a "very painful decision".

"Prime ministers must from time to time make decisions that go against public opinion, when it is important for the country to do so," Netanyahu said.

Israel Agrees to Prisoner Release, Clearing Way for Talks

By ISABEL KERSHNER
Published: July 28, 2013

JERUSALEM — The Israeli cabinet cleared the last obstacle to resuming peace talks with the Palestinians by voting on Sunday to approve the release of 104 Palestinian prisoners.

The prisoner release is an unpopular move with many Israelis, but one that the Palestinian leadership has insisted upon. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu worked over the weekend to convince Israelis that a resumption of the peace process was a vital Israeli interest. After hours of deliberations on Sunday, 13 ministers voted in favor, 7 opposed the release and 2 abstained.

The prisoners, most of whom have served at least 20 years for deadly attacks on Israelis, are to be released in batches depending on progress in the talks.

“This moment is not easy for me,” Mr. Netanyahu said, according to a statement from his office. “It is not easy for the ministers. It is not easy especially for the families, the bereaved families, whose heart I understand. But there are moments in which tough decisions must be made for the good of the country, and this is one of those moments.”

for at 20-30 years, I really do not understand why you seem unhappy about the information being posted, it doesn't refute your OP in any way, but rather adds detail

It takes up a lot of space on this thread. It adds no useful detail - unless you can provide more information about any of the names on the list.

Can you do so?

and some perspective as to how long some of these prisoners have been held. the names will become important if and when any of them are released

you seem to make a deal of the fact that none of the names are immediately familiar or household names, few names are after 30 years incarceration though, unless the trials were front page news on an international basis

and you fail to give good reason why these dates and names should remain hidden from public view other than they were previously unknown, is there some reason you wish it to stay that way?

why do you seem to think that the names and or length of time they have been incarcerated should be kept in secrecy?

As I stated previously I posted a list of the names and time served of the prisoners you posted an article about being released

I'm not upset about these names being "revealed" - I am wondering why you posted the entire list on this thread and not, say, a link to the list. As it stands, it is huge and takes up most of the thread space.

The first two names on the list are the cousins who kidnapped and killed Avraham Bromberg in 1981. They both confessed and were sentenced to death, but the sentence was commuted to life in prison. I believe Hamas originally wanted to include them in the Shalit exchange but ended up not doing so.

You seem to think Google and Wikipedia are the only sources of knowledge in the world.

Do you not actually follow events related to this conflict? Just look things up and cut and paste?

Some of us have a different approach.
