The ugly face of Swedish anti-Semitism

Recently, I had the honor to testify in my role as president of the Swedish Committee against anti-Semitism. I appeared before the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Human Rights in Washington.

To the 20,000 members of Sweden’s Jewish community, anti-Semitism has become a growing problem. Jews identifiable by dress or otherwise have suffered threats and violence.

The Jewish community center in the city of Malmo was fire-bombed and its cemetery desecrated.

This comes after worrying political signals. Malmo’s mayor stated that “we accept neither anti-Semitism nor Zionism in Malmo” and openly advised the Jewish community that they would gain protection from violence and problems if they “distance themselves from Israel.”

and there is no excuse for tolerating it.

Five percent of the entire adult population, and 39% of the Muslim population, harbor strong and consistent antisemitic views. Former Prime Minister Göran Persson described these results as "surprising and terrifying". However, the Rabbi of Stockholm's Orthodox Jewish community, Meir Horden claimed that "It's not true to say that the Swedes are anti-Semitic. Some of them are hostile to Israel because they support the weak side, which they perceive the Palestinians to be."[

If anything shows the link between anti-Zionism and antisemitism, this mayor's statement does the trick.

I hope the Jewish community tells him to go fuck himself and hold him personally responsible if anyone gets hurt after which I'd sue that city into the poorhouse. Asshole.

He's basically giving a green light to thugs who want to attack "Zionist" Jews.

I wonder how the thugs figure that out. Do they ask whether the Jews support Israel before they beat the shit out of them?

By that I mean at best someone who doesn't understand his hypocrisy.

But what "few posters here in IP on DU" do you mean, who would tell all people of the Jewish community in general that they'd gain protection from violence if they distance themselves from Israel?
That's a very harsh accusation to be leveling against a vague subset of contributors to IP on DU - and to be frank, I think that vagueness is both cowardly and unhelpful.

Most certainly I disagree with Malmo's mayor and would NOT say such a mindbendingly freakish thing to the Jewish community, and I wouldn't say it to any community at all, and I freely admit to being a harsh critic of Zionism.

I count myself among those who think Zionism (at least how it it is expressed in IP discussions and as realized "on the ground" by Israeli policy) and full democracy are incompatible. When I say "incompatible" I mean in the strictly logical sense, as in the principle of non-contradiction. On the other hand I gather that there are some who contribute to these discussions who have an affinity to some "left-Zionism" which, so to speak, somehow reconciles this antithesis in a higher or more general synthesis that does in fact recognize essential human rights. To say the least, such a thing isn't even nearly offered by a Netanyahu Beiteinu Bennet type mindset. I'm not only open to such a "left-Zionism", but my intuition says that such a pragmatic/ideological path might be the only real "solution" to the mid-east mess.

I've just noticed recently that this argument is routinely made by supporters of Chavez, for example, WRT Venezuelan "democracy". You're a supporter of Chavez....

http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1014&pid=359858

But Venezuela is a country that doesn't allow freedom of speech/dissent. It has thrown out human rights groups like HRW. Care to explain why you believe Venezuela is a full democracy but Israel isn't?

These discussions give me an idea of how your pack of extreme right wing Zionists operates, and it does operate in a pack.

Extreme right wing indeed. LOL.

Do your opinions on israel as expressed here "gel" with any of theirs?

Or even with Thomas Mulclairs views on Israel for that matter.
