Israeli Apartheid Week Launched
A boycott of Israeli products, the ending of diplomatic relations by the SA government and international sanctions against Israel were just some of the calls made by political parties, trade unions and religious groups at the launch of Israeli Apartheid Week in Johannesburg on Sunday.
The seven-day campaign starting today is to discuss and raise awareness of the plight of Palestinians living under Israeli occupation which, according to the organisations involved, is an extreme form of apartheid that has led to deaths, violation of human rights and segregation.
Among the organisations that pledged their support were Cosatu, the Young Communist League, Muslim Judicial Council, South African Council of Churches (YCL), Stop the Jewish National Fund, ANC Youth League and Kairos Southern Africa.
YCL president Buti Manamela said: Boycott companies with links to Israel because some of them are responsible for atrocities committed against Palestinians.
