Palestinian Prisoner Dies In Israeli Jail After 100 Are Wounded In Clashes

By AFP
JERUSALEM

A Palestinian prisoner died Saturday in an Israeli jail, a prison spokeswoman said, with a Palestinian official charging he was killed during questioning and demanding an international probe.

“Arafat Jaradat... was arrested a few days ago. He was killed during the investigation,” the Palestinian minister in charge of prisoner affairs Issa Qaraqaa told AFP.

“We demand the creation of an international commission of inquiry to probe the circumstances of his death,” Qaraqaa added.

Israel Prisons Service spokeswoman Sivan Weizman said Jaradat, a 30-year-old from the West Bank city of Hebron, died suddenly on Saturday at the Meggido detention center in northern Israel.

1. Shin Bet's account

The Shin Bet internal intelligence service said that Jaradat had been taken ill just before his death.

"Medics were called to treat him but they were unable to save his life," Shin Bet said in a statement, adding that Israeli police had opened an investigation into the circumstances of Jaradat's death.

responsible and give them suspended sentences too. I imagine they're quaking in their
boots right now, afraid of an investigation and all.

Is there any scenario where that will be accepted as true if reported to be so by the Israeli side?

Must be coincidental.

9. They'd probably kick themselves for not running with hanging over cardiac arrest...

Not that it'd be all that more believable as a cause of death. A few who must be those Israel-bashers I'm always hearing about, have been asking how anyone who's kept in maximum security and monitored 24/7 could manage to hang themselves...

10. It's remarkable how the well being of a person can go awry in custody...thanks for link.

The OP reminded me of the lack of consequences the Israeli soldiers received for using a boy as a human shield
a couple of years back.

The two were demoted and given suspended sentences. Wherever this story goes I doubt anyone
responsible for wrong doing, if it occurred, is likely not too worried about the wrath of the law.

Btw, it's those damn Hamas lovers that must be dealt with, all exposed and such with pictures of
them holding guns!!!

11. Investigation of Palestinian detainee's death in custody must include full circumstances

Following the announcement that an investigation was opened into the circumstances surrounding the death of Arafat Jaradat, a Palestinian resident of Sa'ir, who was detained at Megido Prison, B'Tselem stated that the investigation must relate to the full circumstances of the event, and not only to the conduct of those directly responsible for his wellbeing at the time.

The investigation must examine, the detainee's treatment during his interrogation, the procedures followed by the ISA (Shabak) interrogators and the responsibility for setting those procedures. Additionally, the investigation must include the conduct of the physicians who examined Jaradat, as well as the procedures governing the work of physicians in interrogation facilities, the hierarchy under which they operate, and their independence of the ISA.

The investigation must be independent, effective and transparent, and be finalized swiftly.
