White House confirms that US president plans to visit Israel in spring but date not yet decided; Channel 10 reports that trip was made possible by a promise to launch the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
US President Barack Obama is scheduled to visit Israel at the end of March or beginning of April, the White House confirmed Tuesday evening following a Channel 10 report announcing the trip.
Obama did not visit Israel during his first term in office, therefore this would mark his first visit to the country as president. A White House official said that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Obama discussed the visit in a telephone call on January 28, and that the exact date has yet to be decided.
"The start of the president's second term and the formation of a new Israeli government offer the opportunity to reaffirm the deep and enduring bonds between the United States and Israel and to discuss the way forward on a broad range of issues of mutual concern, including Iran and Syria," the official said.
