<snip>
"Thousands of Israelis are gathering at the Tel Aviv square where Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated to mark the 17th anniversary of the former prime ministers death and remember his call for peace.
Rabin was gunned down on Nov. 4, 1995 by a Jewish extremist who opposed his policy of trading land with the Palestinians for peace.
Rabins government negotiated the first interim peace accord with the Palestinians in 1993. He won a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts.
Saturday nights rally at the square that bears Rabins name has become an annual pilgrimage for many Israelis to pay tribute to the slain leader. Participants held candles and waved Israeli flags. Others carried aloft banners calling for protecting democracy."

(135,425 posts)I remember how everyone thought initially that the assassin was Palestinian or from another Arab country, disguised as a religious Jew, then were shocked to learn that it wasn't a disguise. That killer is doing a life term, but he's managed to get married and have a kid from behind bars.

(35,977 posts)I don't have a clear memory of him being assassinated because the mid-90's was a total blur of raising a toddler and not really engaging in anything that happened anywhere but in my own backyard. Anyway, there's something abjectly unfair about his murderer being married and having kids, imo...
I was reading an interesting book about Rabin a while back. It started with the leadup to the rally where he was murdered and his fear of singing up to seconds just before he was murdered, and then went back and through his life. He was an interesting guy, and it was a warts and all picture of him. It's by Dan Kurzman if anyone's interested in reading it...

(45,850 posts)I remember back on DU2 reading snide reminders of Rabin's fate back when there was still talk of a peace deal between the Palestinians and Israel, doesn't seem to be much of a problem these days though for some reason

(50,254 posts)Would be to STOP voting for the parties(especially the new Likud-Beitenyu abomination)that devote themselves to doing nothing but trying to prevent Rabin's dream of peace from ever happening.
Rabin knew the iron fist could never work again. He was right then-he's right now.
Vote out all the hawks-Likud-Beitenyu AND Kadima...and put in a government that will defend Israelis by ENDING the Occupation and the insane war.

(3,093 posts)Somehow that part of his career is always left off of these fawning, revisionist eulogies. That pivotal aspect of his legacy, of course, is alive and well.
