In a video message sent Wednesday to thousands of websites and blogs, President Shimon Peres wished the Muslim world a "generous Ramadan."

In a video aired during a special press conference held at his official Jerusalem residence, which was attended by more than 40 news crews from all over the Arab world, Peres said, "I use this platform as president of Israel to send Ramadan greetings to the millions of Muslims in Israel and throughout the world. As in years past, millions of Muslims around the world, in the Middle East, and in Israel are preparing to start the month of Ramadan, a month of fasting, prayer, and spirituality.

"The month is dedicated to introspection, spiritual practices, quality time with friends and family, and time to consider the present and future - as individuals and collectively. This year there is an additional significance to the soul searching of Ramadan - the Arab world around us is changing. Young people are demanding their freedom, social welfare, and prosperity. The younger generation wants change. I wish the younger generation in Arab countries success in creating a better society, more open, and more prosperous. Ramadan Kareem (generous Ramadan)," the president said.
