U.N. rights expert accuses Israel of excessive force against Palestinians
GENEVA | BY STEPHANIE NEBEHAY
The U.N. human rights investigator for Gaza and the West Bank called on Israel on Thursday to investigate what he called excessive force used by Israeli security forces against Palestinians and to prosecute perpetrators.
Makarim Wibisono, United Nations special rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories, also challenged Israeli authorities to charge or release all Palestinian prisoners being held under lengthy administrative detention, including children.
"The upsurge in violence is a grim reminder of the unsustainable human rights situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and the volatile environment it engenders," he said in a final report to the Human Rights Council.
Israel, backed by its ally the United States, accuses the Geneva-based forum of bias against it.
Twenty-seven Israelis and a U.S. citizen have been killed since October in near-daily Palestinian attacks that have included stabbings, shootings and car-rammings. Israeli forces, for their part, have killed at least 157 Palestinians, 101 of them assailants, according to Israeli authorities.

(6,171 posts)as Israel didn't grant him access to the occupied territories he was supposed to monitor.
I guess Israel thinks that what happens in the West Bank, should stay in the West Bank.

They tried once to appoint a Jewish investigator as a sham to pretend impartiality but Justice Goldstone retracted his report and the UN then rendered him persona non grata .

(30,109 posts)Same UN that recently put Burundi on the Human Rights Council, elected Saudi Arabia to lead the Human Rights Council, gave genocidal Sudan a leadership position at UNESCO, put Iran on the UN Women's Executive Board, and suspended an official who blew the lid on UN Peacekeeper rape of children in the Central African Republic.
Why should you or anyone else who is sane take a heinously vile organization like that seriously?
That cannot be your idea of human rights. Right?

(30,109 posts)The UN cannot elect Saudi Arabia to be the Head of the UN Human Rights Council and expect to be taken seriously.
But note how Israel haters pretend it's a serious organization.
That's their idea of human rights.

(3,967 posts)the nations of the world by and large do not care that much about human rights within their borders or beyond, and the UN puts that sentiment into action. i don't know why people would expect the united nations to be something different than the nations of which it is constituted. they vote. even the security council has in addition to the US four other former (or current?) colonial powers including two de facto dictatorships .
