Democrats and Republicans Unite Against EU Labeling of Israeli Products

Senators Ted Cruz and Kirsten Gillibrand sent a bipartisan letter to Federica Mogherini, vice president of the European Commission on Monday, voicing concerns over a recent European Union decision to move forward with new guidelines to label Israeli manufactured products imported to Europe.

The letter, signed by 36 Senators across both sides of the aisle, follows a similar letter sent from the Congress by Rep. Doug Lamborn of Colorado on Thursday, November 5. The letter had a similar number of signatories and supporters from both Democrats and Republicans alike.

“I thought that Congress should send this letter, because if our allies in Europe implement these guidelines they will undermine American policy,” Congressman Doug Lamborn told TPS.

“It’s unbelievable that the EU would even consider such steps,” added the Congressman. “It would be an understatement to say that this is discriminatory. Israel has made so many concessions toward the Palestinian leadership. In return all they received was violence and the launching of diplomatic war against Israel in the UN, the EU and elsewhere.”

The 72 joint representatives of both legislative houses expressed their concern that the proposed EU labeling guidelines will only undermine US efforts to facilitate a negotiable bilateral agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

Both letters warned that enacting the guidelines plays into the narrative of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanction (BDS) movement, calling it an effort to delegitimize Israel rather than promote peace.

Israeli products are labeled "Israel". If you want to boycott Israel, don't buy stuff that says "Israel".

Since the law was passed, there will be products labeled "Israel" and products labeled "Westbank".

Are people really trying to make an argument that not buying Westbank-stuff is discriminating against Israel?
