Al Qaeda Apologizes for Murdering 20 Druze

Al Qaeda's Syria affiliate said on Saturday it would prosecute members involved in an shoot-out in northwest Idlib province that killed at least 20 members of the country's Druze minority.

In an official statement published on Twitter, Nusra Front sought to allay fears of further attacks on minorities, saying that some of its members acted "in clear violation of the leadership's views," reports AFP.

I post this because the Druze represent another potential flash point in the region. Israel has an influential Druze population who are starting to pressure the government to protect the Syrian Druze. There are several potential solutions, one of which is to allow the Druze to seek refuge in Israel. The more extreme (and unlikely) scenario is for the IDF to enter Syria and create a buffer zone where the Druze can be safe. In any case, the Druze are prominent in the highest levels of the IDF and government so one must assume that there is a lot of pressure on the government to do something to help the Syrian Druze.
