Ukrainian President to Sign Decree on New Wave of Mobilization on Jan. 14

Baku-APA. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko stated that he will sign a decree on the next wave of mobilization, APA reports quoting gazeta.ru.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said Tuesday he will sign a decree authorizing a new wave of mobilization in the crisis-hit country on January 14, according to a post on his official website.

"Tomorrow, I will sign a decree on the next wave of mobilization. I am certain that the Ukrainian people will support this decision and the mobilization will be carried out successfully," Poroshenko said.

According to the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, the mobilization is expected to begin on January 20, and will be held in three stages. Ukraine plans to bolster its military by calling up some 50,000 people during the new wave of mobilization.

The people of Eastern Ukraine are ethnic Russians, they no longer feel loyalty to Ukraine, they want to live in a country where they can feel free from discrimination...

Why don't they just move to Russia?

This is territory of the ukrainian nation and the sovereign of the ukrainian nation (the ukrainian citizens) decide what happens to that territory. The separatists have no claims to decide what to do with territory that is not theirs. All solutions must therefore include the will of the people on both sides of the fence.

Ukraine could offer a simple peace-deal:
- We keep the land, you move away and we will pay you to move away. (IMF, EU andsoforth could lend the money.)
- The land will then be turned into a special governance zone, with safeguards against discrimination for those who opt to stay anyways.

Complex Ties: Russia's Armed Forces Depend On Ukraine's Military Industry

It is an ironic fact that much of the equipment used by the Russian troops in Crimea, and those maneuvering on Ukraine's border, is produced by Kyiv's military industry.

The equipment includes the motors that keep all of Russia's combat helicopters flying and many of the engines that power Russian naval ships. It also includes about half of the air-to-air missiles carried by Russian fighter planes.

But the sight of Ukrainian-produced hardware now pointed belligerently at Kyiv is not simply incongruous. It also underlines how much Russia's military risks shooting itself in the foot if rising tensions cause the two countries to break ties. Conversely, it could also lead Russia to seek to control Ukraine regardless of the costs.

In a recent article, RFE/RL Russian Service's military correspondent Vladimir Voronov argues that severing ties with Ukraine would have a far more dramatic impact on Russia's defense program than any Western sanctions restricting sales of Western military hardware.
