A Russian general has been killed in a mine blast in Ukraine, one of the highest-ranking military officers to be snuffed out in the war. Maj. Gen. Vladimir Zavadsky died Tuesday, according to an announcement from graduates of his alma mater, the Moscow Higher Combined Arms Command School.
The deputy commander of the 14th Army Corps, Zavadsky was not killed in combat but is thought to have been killed by a landmine placed by a fellow Russian unit to target Ukrainian reconnaissance groups.
The investigation is considering the possibility of an explosion on a mine that was previously installed by a neighboring unit in order to combat the enemys [sabotage and reconnaissance unit], the well-connected Telegram channel VChK-OGPU wrote, citing an unnamed source. An attempt is also being made to attribute General Zavadskys death to an artillery strike by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the channel said.

(3,417 posts)Lots of social media stories about the Russian military failures, economic collapse, and even Putin on his deathbed (a la Kim Jung Un). Is Russia REALLY running out of tanks, helicopters, rifles, food, and generals? Is the Russian economy on the verge of collapse?
While I am immensely happy that Ukraine has been making progress against the Russian juggernaut, I wonder if the facts on the ground are quite as reported in western media (especially social media).
I weep for the Russian families whose conscripted sons are being slaughtered on behalf of a corrupt, incompetent regime. The horror suffered by the Ukrainians defending their new-found independence is evident on the news as well. Both stories bring grief.
My honest question to the DU community is about how much the narrative of Russia's abject failures should be believed? Are we influenced too much by a propaganda machine spinning "happy talk"?

I selected The Daily Beast for lack of a paywall, and lack of a right-wing slant like The Telegraph, which is also covering the story.
