Tokyo Medical University 'changed female exam scores'

2 August 2018

Reports that one of Japan's most prestigious medical universities tampered with female applicants' entrance exam scores have sparked an outcry on social media.

Japanese paper Yomiuri Shimbun says Tokyo Medical University began altering results in 2011 to ensure under 30% of successful applicants would be women.

The private university says it will investigate the discrimination reports.

Users online took aim at the Japanese government over the scandal.

Critics suggested the allegations were ironic given Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's stated commitment to boost female participation in the workforce.

The US shares some of the same antiquated feelings about the changing roles of women. We see our own culture that exalts the cheesy, manly men created by Hollywood, and men wanted to be those mighty warriors, the stalwart cowboys, the caped crusader, the tough guys who could do anything. Not too different from the classical characters of Japanese men of old.

From an economic viewpoint, these outdated gender roles will eventually change and real men will will discover their true worth must be earned, not propped up by rules, regulations and fragile egos.
