China investigating Uighur suspects in Tiananmen Square blaze

Chinese police are hunting for suspects from the far west region of Xinjiang in the wake of what has been described by witnesses as a suicide attack on Tiananmen Square.

In what appears to be an audacious strike at the heart of the Chinese capital, a white jeep ploughed into tourists on Monday before exploding into flames underneath the giant portrait of Chairman Mao.

At least five people were killed and 38 injured, according to the Chinese state media.

The authorities are now hunting two Uighur suspects, according to a notice circulated to hotels in the capital.
