Can I say 'That was stupid'?

CBS This Morning (TV show) had a story of an American woman and her Canadian husband who are being held captive in Afghanistan by a faction of the Taliban.

They had gone to Afghanistan in 2012 to go back packing, and chose “an unstable” area of the country in which to back pack.
What could possibly go wrong?

I’m reminded of a news story a year or two ago about Iranian troops taking captive some people who had gone back packing along the Iraq/Iranian border.
Again, what could possibly go wrong?

Just my educated guess. Of course they decided to go to the most dangerous and unknown area on earth for a nice hike. People do that all the time. (????)
