Putin will not meet with Erdogan at Paris climate conference: Kremlin

Cairo has now said that it stands ready to fill any trade gaps left after Russia said it would impose economic sanctions on Ankara

Russian President Vladimir Putin will not meet with Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the Paris climate conference, the Kremlin said on Monday.

Tensions between Moscow and Ankara have been at fever pitch ever since Turkey shot down a Russian jet, claiming that it had violated its airspace. While NATO endorsed Turkey's findings, Russia has denied this with some independent evaluations querying the accuracy of both accounts. Erdogan alleges that Putin has not spoken to him since the jet was downed.

Last week, Moscow said that Turkey had invited the Russian leader for sideline talks although it did not confirm whether the two presidents would meet.

More than 100 world leaders have gathered in Paris for the meeting, also known as COP21, in hopes of reaching one of the most comprehensive agreements on climate change to date.

at this rate, I think there is a possibility that Russia might end up isolating itself in the end. NATO member countries are not going to applaud Turkey's actions on this instance, but they're not going to REALLY work with Russia in Syria, either. For instance, I don't see France REALLY committing itself to finding stability in Syria, or in the entire region, for that matter (France was goading for military intervention in Libya back in 2011). US and Russia are already fighting a proxy war in Syria with the "moderate rebels" equipped with weapons that CIA handed over to the Saudis, and Russia air-bombing them. And if the Russians, unable to find a breakthrough in their air campaigns, commit ground troops, Syria might end up becoming an Afghanistan of the 21st century. But only, the situation will be even more bloodier, and messier this time (it is already so needlessly messy and bloody) with deadly consequences spreading clusterfuck well beyond the ME.
