Barack Obama and Vladimir Putin break the ice; hold coffee-table summit in Turkey

US President Barack Obama and Vladimir Putin of Russia huddled on Sunday for a coffee-table summit, breaking the ice for the first time since Moscow launched air bombardments in Syria. Sitting in leather armchairs on opposite sides of a small table, the pair leaned forward in animated talks on the sidelines of a summit in Turkey's Mediterranean resort of Antalya, state television showed.

According to Russian news agencies, the pair met for 20 minutes. The two heads of state held the summit in an unlikely venue, nearby a potted palm tree as other delegates wandered by and security agents partially obstructed the view of the television camera.

1. Obama, Putin discuss Syria conflict on G-20 summit sidelines

ANTALYA, Turkey (AP) -- President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin traded views on Syria's civil war and broached the tense topic of Ukraine during an impromptu sit-down Sunday in Turkey, American and Russian officials said.

The roughly 35-minute meeting played out on the sidelines of the Group of 20 economic summit, which brings together leaders from major rich and developing nations. The White House said they discussed a new proposal to end the Syrian conflict and Obama's hope that Russia's airstrikes in Syria will focus on IS, not opposition groups fighting Syrian President Bashar Assad.

The U.S. also said Obama and Putin had agreed that Syria needs a political transition led by Syrians, preceded by negotiations mediated by the United Nations and a cease-fire. Obama and Putin have long been at odds about whether Assad can maintain a role following that transition.

Obama also renewed his call for Russia to withdraw forces, weapons and support for pro-Russian rebels in Ukraine, the White House said.

I used to have a book on the study of body language and what hand positions mean in conveying internal thoughts. I thought this interesting that both have "thumbs up" but with Obama's hands further apart with highly raised thumbs and Putin's hands with thumbs close together in a lowered more relaxed position. I realize this seems trivial but the photo is fascinating. I no longer have the book or I would have looked it up.

2. Obama, Putin agree on need for political transition, ceasefire in Syria - U.S. official

Nov 2015

U.S. President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed on the need for a Syria-led political transition, including U.N.-mediated talks, when they spoke at the G20 summit on Sunday, a White House official said.

The Cold War superpower foes have been at odds over the future of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, whom Moscow supports and Washington wants gone, as well as the conflict in Ukraine.

In a 35 minute discussion on the sidelines of the Group of 20 (G20) meeting in Turkey, Obama and Putin discussed efforts to find a solution to the conflict, which had been made more pressing by the attacks in Paris that killed 129 people, the U.S. official said.

"President Obama and President Putin agreed on the need for a Syrian-led and Syrian-owned political transition, which would be proceeded by UN-mediated negotiations between the Syrian opposition and regime as well a ceasefire," the official said.

3. Clinton asks Turkey to ’make up its mind’ on ISIL
Sun Nov 15, 2015, 01:52 PM
Nov 2015

US presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton has that said along with the Gulf countries, Turkey must make up its mind in the fight against extremist groups in Syria and Iraq, urging Turkey to contribute more to the US-led coalition against the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL).

"Are they going to stand with us against this kind of jihadi radicalism or not?" Clinton, a former first lady and secretary of state, said during a Democratic debate. Clinton, a frontrunner, is seeking the nomination for president from her party in the 2016 election.

In Antalya, US President Barack Obama commended Turkey's role in the fight against ISIL, saying that Turkey had been a "strong partner" with the US-led coalition in going after ISIL in Syria and Iraq. Earlier this summer, however, Obama criticized Turkey for not fully cracking down on the flow of foreign fighters into Syria.

"The discussion we had today I think was very helpful in helping continue to coordinate work that we are doing together, to help to fortify the borders between Syria and Turkey that allow Daesh [ISIL] to operate," Obama said. Daesh is the Arabic acronym of ISIL.

4. Chomsky: Syrian al-Nusra main recipient of Turkish aid
Sun Nov 15, 2015, 01:54 PM
Nov 2015

World famous linguist Noam Chomsky has claimed that the Syrian extremist group al-Nusra has been a major recipient of Turkish aid and accused Turkish intelligence of selling out US-trained moderate Syrian forces.

"Turkey is the main supporter of jihadi organizations, which are merely distinguished by the Islamic State [the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL)]," Chomsky told a packed group of students, journalists and activists at Boston College on Saturday. Chomsky's speech was part of a conference on press freedom in the Middle East organized by the Peace Islands Institute.

Chomsky is not the first to accuse Turkey of what many have called implicit support for radical groups in Syria opposed to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Turkish authorities have been the subject of much criticism for the porous and loosely inspected border that has been a major transit route for Syria-bound foreign fighters.

Chomsky said Turkey has been very resistant to attacking ISIL, despite a recent deal between Turkey and the US on the use of Turkish airfields for US warplanes. He added that the US claimed or believed that Turkey would join the fight against ISIL after the deal. "But they didn't," Chomsky said, recalling that Turkey instead attacked Kurds in Iraq and Syria.

Who’s in Control? Obama or the Generals?

By Finian Cunningham

November 16, 2015 "Information Clearing House" - "RT" - US President Barack Obama’s business-like meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the G20 summit at the weekend belies a spate of bellicose comments made by the Pentagon towards Moscow. So, who is in control: Obama or the generals?
The two leaders held an earnest 35-minute face-to-face discussion on the opening day of the G20 conference in Antalya, Turkey. The gathering of the world’s top 20 economic nations was dominated by the massive terror attack in Paris two days earlier, which claimed at least 129 lives and hundreds more wounded.

Obama’s meeting with Putin – their first since Russia launched its military intervention in Syria nearly seven weeks ago – was described by the White House as “constructive”.

The American president even appeared to welcome Russian airstrikes against terror groups fighting the Syrian government, most prominently Islamic State (IS) jihadists, also known as ISIL.

“As the diplomacy continues, President Obama welcomed efforts by all nations to confront the terrorist group ISIL and noted the importance of Russia’s military efforts in Syria focusing on the group,” said a White House spokesman.

That’s quite a contrast in substance and tone from a speech made by Defense Secretary Ashton Carter only a week before.

In a blustering tirade, Carter labeled Russia a “global threat” in a speech at the Reagan Library in California. He denounced Russia for “nuclear saber-rattling” and “aggression” in Europe and he slammed Putin’s military operation in Syria as “throwing gasoline” on a fire, which, he said, would lead to more terrorism across the Middle East.

Carter may have said, in passing, that the US did not want a “hot war” with Russia, but his overall thrust was one of unalloyed belligerence towards Moscow. The Pentagon chief also bracketed Russia with the terror group, Islamic State, as a main national security risk.

That depiction of Russia as a global threat along with jihadi terrorists is flatly contradicted by Obama and his Secretary of State John Kerry’s diplomatic engagement with Russia.

Kerry has praised his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, in helping to seal the P5+1 nuclear deal with Iran, for instance. And while attending the latest round of talks on the Syria conflict in Vienna this weekend, there was the usual bonhomie rapport between the top American and Russian diplomats. Indeed Kerry and Lavrov issued a joint statement condemning the terrorist massacre in Paris, and both emphasized that the atrocity underlined the urgency to find a negotiated resolution to the crisis in Syria.

This is by no means the first time that a schism has become apparent in Washington with regard to Russia.

I did think Cunningham made a good point at the end of his article, though..given what I've seen of McCain/Graham Team all over the US Media whipping for war. But, then many of us who've been around awhile have suspected that.
Let's hope "this moment" builds. At least its finally exposing the divergence for what it is.

from the article:

The upshot is that US foreign policy is dangerously all over the place because of competing power players within Washington. The disturbing conclusion is that the American president and his State Department are simply not in control. It’s like watching a driver of an articulated truck whose grip on the wheel has no steering.

Some new things are being exposed and other "old news"" that was important is revisited. If all that can get traction in this Election Year.....

As you say:

It may be our last chance to make the changes that are long overdue. We have to hope that those who care will give it "their all"
