Egypt Top Prosecutor Wounded in Cairo Bombing, Police Say
Egypts top prosecutor was wounded Monday when a bomb struck his convoy in Cairo, the latest assault on government officials and security forces by suspected Islamist militants.
Hisham Barakat suffered a dislocated shoulder and a nose injury, state-run MENA news agency reported, citing Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, a health ministry spokesman. His convoy was attacked as it passed by Cairos military academy. Television footage showed at least four charred cars nearby.
It was the first attempt on the life of a senior government official since 2013. Tuesday marks the second anniversary of the popular uprising against Islamist President Mohamed Mursi, and Barakat has been a key figure in the prosecution of the ousted leaders Muslim Brotherhood backers.
Political violence has challenged efforts to revive Egypts economy, which has foundered since the 2011 uprising against then-President Hosni Mubarak triggered an exodus of foreign investment and sent foreign exchange reserves plunging. The benchmark EGX 30 stock index extended declines after the bombing to trade 1.65 percent lower at 11:43 a.m. in Cairo.
