One identical twin went vegan while the other didn't. See what happened

Healthy twins who ate a vegan diet for eight weeks had lower “bad” low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, cholesterol, better blood sugar levels, and greater weight loss than siblings who ate a diet of meat and vegetables, a new study found.

“There was a 10% to 15% drop in LDL cholesterol, a 25% drop in insulin, and a 3% drop in body weight in just eight weeks, all by eating real food without animal products,” said lead study author Christopher Gardner, a research professor of medicine at the Stanford Prevention Research Center in Palo Alto, California.

A vegan diet differs from a vegetarian diet in that it eliminates not only animal flesh but dairy, eggs or any other ingredient derived from animals. A strictly plant-based diet can be higher in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients compared with other dietary patterns, said Gardner, who is also the director of the Nutrition Studies Research Group at Stanford.

“The results of this study confirm the benefit of current dietary guidance to reduce cardiovascular disease risk,” Alice Lichtenstein, director and senior scientist at Tufts University’s Cardiovascular Nutrition Laboratory, told CNN in an email. She was not involved in the study.

to be clear. You can go nuts on a junk food vegan diet of french fries and oreos. But, a healthy vegan diet is very good for you.

Which is why I have to avoid Soy and Soy based products. Wheat too. Also being Lactose intolerant. So eating a more vegan diet is out for me.

Lean protein, healthy fats, eggs, low glycemic vegetables work best for me.

5. Avoiding soy is a good idea, it's quality is questionable

I also have to avoid soy, sends my stomach on a roller-coaster ride. Whenever I see a dish or baked good labeled "vegan" I have to ask if it has soy after getting a "soy surprise" in one of the best tasting pumpkin pies I ever had.

Although I have eaten very little dairy, no meat, no fried foods, I still have borderline high "bad" cholesterol so go figure.

My blood lipids are good. The LDL is a tad high, but then, not having the female hormones is part of that problem.

Diabetes. The best case of eating a very healthy vegan diet of whole foods, very little salt, oil and sugar and an initial Dr supervised fasting for several weeks I’ve seen allowed an obese woman in a wheel chair with high cholesterol, diabetes and I’m not sure what other health issues get off 19 prescription drugs (I think she remained on 2) and ditch the wheel chair. It was amazing to see her walking around the complex with joy. I was at the same clinic for a 5 day stay to kick nicorette when I met her. It was amazing to see. I also met several other patients there that reversed heart disease the same way.

So I’m with you on the health benefits not to mention the benefits to the planet. Thanks for posting.
