Venezuela shopping centres halve opening times as crisis bites

8 February 2016 Latin America & Caribbean

Shopping centres in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, say they will be halving their opening times to four hours a day.

The move will allow them to comply with government energy rationing.

Ministers says a severe drought caused by El Nino has brought 18 of the country's hydro-electric dams to critically low water levels.

A spokesman for the country's retail association said the drop in working hours would have an impact on jobs.

The state energy corporation (Corpoelec) had wanted cuts twice a day, between 1pm and 3pm and then again between 7pm and 9pm.

Now, do NOT tell me these Hydro Electric Dams were build prior to Chavez, for we all know Chavez caused all the problems of Venezuela.

Guri Dam build in 1963 (Supplies 1/3 of Venezuelan Electricity)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guri_Dam

74% of Venezuela's electricity comes from renewable energy like hydroelectric power. As of 2006 the Guri Dam alone supplied more than a third of Venezuela's electricity. Parts of the power generated at Guri is exported to Colombia and Brazil. The risks of this strategy became apparent in 2010, when, due to a prolonged drought, water levels were too low to produce enough electricity to meet demand. In January 2010, the Venezuelan government imposed rolling blackouts of two hours every day throughout the country to combat low water levels behind the dam due to drought

In 1958 you had Macagua I:

In 1962 you had Macaqua #2 and #3:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macagua_Dam#Macagua_II

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macagua_Dam#Macagua_III

In 1998 you had Caruachi Dam (Complete by Chavez but started before he took over):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caruachi_Dam

Chavez did start the Tocoma and Tayucay dams which is under construction. Thus by NOT using COAL or Oil to provide Electricity, but instead relying on unreliable water, wind and solar power, this electrical shortage all the fault of the Socialist Government of Chavez, so lets get rid of it and go back to the Government the provided electricity when it was needed for they NEVER had a drought hit them while they were in charge.

Side note: Any Government can rule doing good times, the key to ruling it how does the Government handle bad times? The pre-Chavez governments of Venezuela had a long history of FAILING the lower classes doing times of Crisis, thus the support for Chavez from those groups while he was alive. The Government of Venezuela is now split, will the opposition work with the present President to solve this crisis or just use it to attack the present government? The opposition is united in its opposition to the President but has no real center except that opposition. i.e. the opposition oppose the Present Government's program in what the Government wants to do, but the opposition has no alternatives to that program. That is a recipe to disaster and I fear that is where Venezuela is headed for.
