Uruguay Will Build First Sustainable School in Latin America
Montevideo, Feb 2 (Prensa Latina) The construction of the first sustainable school in Latin America started in the small coastal area of Jaureguiberry, in the southern department of Canelones, Uruguay, local media reported today.
The ingenious project was declared Ministerial Interest by the Ministries of Education and Culture, Housing, Land Management, Environment and Foreign Relations, and also has the support of the National Administration of Public Education and the UniversityâÖs School of Architecture.
The school will be built in seven weeks using traditional and recyclable materials like cardboard, bottles, aluminum cans and tires. They will use the technique known worldwide as Biotecture, promoted by US architect Michael Reynolds, creator of Earthship Biotecture.
Juan Pablo Méndez, a project spokesperson, told La República journal that similar constructions have been carried out in deserts and in Usuahia, Argentina.
He explained that the school will be connected to the water and electricity systems, but it will not need them because "it will have solar energy and rain water that will be stored in tanks to be treated and will become drinkable".
