(Xpost from Science) Confirmed: Fracking Caused Ohio Earthquakes

Hat tip to truedelphi.

Some of us knew this day was coming, now it's arrived.

A dozen earthquakes in northeastern Ohio were almost certainly induced by injection of gas-drilling wastewater into the earth, Ohio oil and gas regulators said Friday as they announced a series of tough new regulations for drillers.

Among the new regulations: Well operators must submit more comprehensive geological data when requesting a drill site, and the chemical makeup of all drilling wastewater must be tracked electronically.

Ohio regulators, not Federal, not the dreaded "Job-Killing" EPA, but State Regulators - which is the best kind of 10th Amendment approved Government, not "BIG" Government, has determined that a dozen Earthquakes which surprisingly occurred in Ohio and the midwests where there are no known faults - where apparently man-made. They were the results of hydraulic fracturing.

I love this, but I have one question about the Kos article arcane1 Mar 2012 #2
They weren't really looking at the chemistry as much as the geophysics Dead_Parrot Mar 2012 #5

We had earthquakes shown to be caused by the drill site as well txlibdem Mar 2012 #6

I've only scanned the actual report, but I don't see anything about determining the chemical makeup of the fluids, only that the fluids themselves be tracked so they know where it's being dumped. I hope I find it, because that would be GREAT news!

So no, not much in there. A google of 'fracking chemicals groundwater' will lead to other studies that concentrate on the chem.

The Kos article linked me to a ThinkProgress article which linked me to the NY Daily, and none of them apparently linked to the actual study

...I just cut and pasted.

edit: Hmm, 'cut and pasted' sounds wrong. 'Cutted and paste'? no. Maybe 'cutted and pasted'... Dammit, What's the past tense of a compound (usually) hyphenated verb?

Anyone got Stephen Fry's phone number?

They pump the chemicals in there first before disposing in Ohio.

I believe there were 12 earthquakes centered on that fracking well.
