European Association of Geochemistry

[font size=3]Even optimistic estimates for what might be achieved at December's Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris will not be enough to save the world's coral reefs, according to a Plenary session analysis presented at the Goldschmidt conference in Prague.

Speaking to the world's major gathering of geochemists, Professor Peter F Sale (University of Windsor, Canada) spelled out the stark choice facing climate scientists in the run-up to the Paris conference. The stated aim for the COP21 climate conference is to limit a temperature increase to less than +2C by the end of the century*.

"Even if Paris is wildly successful, and a treaty is struck, ocean warming and ocean acidification are going to continue beyond the end of this century."

"We need to wake up to the idea that business as usual, even clever taxation schemes, will not act fast enough to reduce global emissions. This is a global emergency, which requires us to decarbonise within the next 20 years, or face temperatures that will eliminate ecosystems like coral reefs, and indeed many systems that humans depend on."

To act as 'arks' to keep such species alive and as spawning grounds to repopulate the oceans after we manage to turn things around, centuries in the future.

that might equate to putting those things in a ziploc bag only to fester away since we probably won't be around to open the "pods" when the biosphere becomes less hostile.

What needs to happen, and I am certain it won't be easy or socially acceptable to many and certainly many humans will perish but we need to wean ourselves from the capitalism teat and stop enabling those who are refusing to take their foot off the accelerator as we are heading full scream ahead toward the cliff of extinction for the entire biosphere. And we need to do it ten years ago.

be convinced. I am sorry to be so pessimistic but according this report--we really need to get serious NOW.

I really envy the ability of some people to say things like that with a straight face.

Won't happen, even if we elect Mark Z. Jacobson to be Dictator-at-Large.

We've been told so, right here on DU, so it must be true!

Just have faith, and all will be well.

Now say three Our Wind Turbine Fathers and a Hail Solar Mary.......
