June is third monthly heat record so far this year

Overnight Energy & Environment: June breaks heat record

IT'S NOT JUST YOU: Last month was the hottest in the federal government's 135 years of records, the third monthly heat record so far this year.

The average temperature on the world's land and water surfaces was 61.48 degrees Fahrenheit, according to a Monday report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

It broke the old record -- set only a year ago -- by 0.22 degrees.

NOAA said both the land and surface averages individually set records as well in June.

March and May this year both set similar heat records, while January and February were the second hottest on record.

Additionally, the first six months of 2015 have been the hottest since records began in 1880, NOAA said.

Global temperatures so far this year are record-warm. And aside from eastern North America, we were all in it together, with areas of ‘’much warmer than average” temperatures on all continents and across parts of all observed ocean basins.

This map shows temperature rankings for the January-June 2015 period, and as you can see, surface temperatures have been not just warmer than average, but much warmer than average—even record warm—across large areas of both ocean and land.

Here are some excerpts from NCEI’s monthly update for June:

The first six months of 2015 comprised the warmest such period on record across the world's land and ocean surfaces, at 0.85°C (1.53°F) above the 20th century average, surpassing the previous record set in 2010 by 0.09°C (0.16°F).
