Nicaraguan canal threatens indigenous community’s way of life

Bangkukuk Taik is one of nine indigenous and Afro-descendent communities that make up Nicaragua’s Rama-Kriol territory. The village’s 140 residents live entirely off the land — hunting, fishing and farming yucca, bananas, sugarcane, beans, corn and other crops. It is home to the last fluent speakers of the Rama language.
