Toshiba Reinforces Initiatives Toward a Hydrogen Economy

TOKYO--Toshiba Corporation today announced the opening of the Toshiba Group Hydrogen Energy Research & Development Center (HRDC) at its Fuchu Complex in western Tokyo. The new Center will concentrate Group-wide initiatives to realize a hydrogen economy, and will drive forward the development and demonstration of solutions integrating hydrogen-related energy technologies. Toshiba Group aims to increase the sales of hydrogen-related business to 100 billion yen by 2020.

Toshiba Group has essential technologies, including photovoltaic, wind, hydro and other renewable generation systems, water electrolysis systems and fuel cells, for achieving a hydrogen economy, a future where hydrogen is utilized as a low carbon clean fuel source. Toshiba Group will integrate these technologies in end-to-end solutions, extending from production to utilization of hydrogen.

Working towards the realization of local energy production for local consumption, Toshiba Group will develop a practical energy supply system that uses renewable energy to power hydrogen-generating water electrolysis systems, and then uses fuel cells to convert that hydrogen to electricity as and when needed. The system will be deployed in locations where electricity generation and transmission costs are high, such as isolated islands and remote places, so as to help cut costs and achieve a stable electricity supply.



Looking to the future, Toshiba Group also aims to establish a hydrogen supply chain by 2025. For example, hydrogen produced overseas at low cost, using large-scale windmills, will be used to generate electricity in hydrogen-fired gas turbine power plants in Japan. This will allow large amounts of hydrogen, a source of carbon-free clean electricity, to be stored and supplied without any need for a transmission line to connect the overseas power generation source, and Japan, the power consumption point.



Output from solar and wind power sources is unreliable, but it can be used to power water electrolysis systems that produce hydrogen, and that hydrogen can be transported and stored for use when needed...

You seriously need to stop with this bullshit.

Your cheap solar to hydrogen graphic is not from the article, it's a piece of shit out on the internet: http://technologygreenenergy-e-online.blogspot.com/2013/09/a-list-of-alternative-energy-sources.html

From one of your other "hydrogen is green" posts, the Sphera product led me to this graphic, which really tells us what the hydrogen economy is all about.

Notice that there's a little wind and solar to make it look pretty, but mostly it's COAL with CCS and Natural Gas that's being used to make the hydrogen.

It's a scam by the fossil fuel industry to make us think we're being green.



This is all bullshit and it will fail under the weight of lies as the lies are exposed and/or reveal themselves.

Shame on you for posting this stuff.

I think you know better.

How does this hydrogen get to Japan? In diesel powered tankers?

Let's face it, the fossil fuel industry has been behind the "hydrogen economy" this entire time, it's no secret.

BP, Chevron, Shell, and Conoco Phillips along with a handful of automakers and electronics firms are looking to cash in on this continuation of dependence on fossil fuels.

They won't be using wind and solar, it's cost prohibitive. Careful readers will see that they only suggest that it can be done, not that it will be done.

In fact, 95% of Hydrogen is made using Natural Gas steam reforming.

Please knock it off.

This DOE Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Program activity is focused on advancing cost-effective, efficient production of hydrogen from renewable, fossil and nuclear energy resources.

Hydrogen from Natural Gas

The Offices of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) and Fossil Energy (FE) are working to reduce the cost of producing hydrogen via steam methane reforming. EERE is focused on distributed hydrogen production from natural gas and bio-derived liquid feedstocks and FE is focused on sub-centralized and centralized hydrogen production. Although hydrogen from natural gas is certainly a viable near-term option, it is not viewed by DOE as a long-term solution because it does not help solve the green house gas (GHG) or energy security issues.

Hydrogen from Coal

FE is also investigating carbon sequestration technologies, in associated programs, as an option for managing and stabilizing greenhouse gas emissions from coal-fired plants.

Hydrogen from Nuclear Power

Research sponsored by the Office of Nuclear Energy (NE) is focused on developing the commercial-scale production of hydrogen using heat from a nuclear energy system. Key research areas include high-temperature thermochemical cycles, high-temperature electrolysis, and reactor/process interface issues.

Hydrogen from Renewable Resources

Research sponsored by EERE is focused on developing advanced technologies for producing hydrogen from domestic renewable energy resources that minimize environmental impacts. Key research areas include electrolysis, thermochemical conversion of biomass, photolytic and fermentative micro-organism systems, photoelectrochemical systems, and high-temperature chemical cycle water splitting.

Basic Research

In Office of Science's basic research program, a major emphasis will be placed on fundamental understanding of photoinduced water splitting that uses the energy of sunlight to separate water into hydrogen and oxygen by semiconductors or photocatalytic assemblies. To enable more efficient, lower-cost fossil-based hydrogen production, fundamental research in catalysis, membranes, and gas separation will be emphasized.
