High-street Valentine’s Day cards are being made with illegally-logged trees

High-street Valentine’s Day cards are being made with illegally-logged trees

It’s no secret that Valentine’s Day is basically a day for shops to make loads of money – but now it could actually be destroying the rainforests as well.

The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) have released a report which claims many cards brought in the run up to Valentine’s Day are made with illegally sourced wood from tropical rainforests.

The report highlights the fact that card manufacturers are exploiting a legal loophole in EU law, meaning imported greeting cards, musical instruments, and books can be made with illegally-logged wood.

During their investigations WWF found that high-street greeting card retailers Clinton and Card Factory both used illegal tropical hardwood (MTH) in the manufacturing of their cards.

Unfortunately, with the backward hemp laws in this country (hello - hemp is not marijuana!), I wonder if that's even legal in all states.

Here in Oklahoma (I love my Sooner state, but we're ground zero for some crazy shit.), thousands of acres were used to cultivate hemp up through World War II, and we now spend millions of dollars every year to spray herbicides on the hemp that continues to spring up.

I was told once that the Hearst family used it's clout to help destroy the hemp industry in the U.S. because the Hearsts were heavily invested in wood pulp paper. Whether that's true or not, I'm not sure.
