Climate change remedies 'affordable', says global body (BBC)

By Roger Harrabin
BBC environment analyst

Politicians will put the world economy at risk if they fail to tackle climate change, a global commission has warned.

The body, a group of chief executives, former prime ministers and finance ministers, argues the cost of tackling climate change is modest.

Its report says adding 5% to the $6 trillion (£3.7tn; 4.6tn euros) a year due to be spent on power and transport projects could buy clean technology.

Critics say the report is too optimistic.

The Global Commission on the Economy and Climate was set up by seven governments and informed by research organisations around the world.

"... a group of chief executives, former prime ministers and finance ministers ..."

would be overly optimistic? Politicians? Really?

I would rather hear it from a group of scientists, engineers and enlightened industrialists myself.

Because they deal in truth, not political fictions.

Seeing as we're already on the ragged edge of all-out climate collapse today with a global temp rise of less than 1C in the past century, I'd say they're blowing smoke up our collective asses.

I'd say these incremental changes they're proposing to address climate change are about 30 years too late at this point.

I still don't see them actually making more than token gestures, when it seems convenient.

we were actually doing anything in the way of mitigation. Since we aren't, it's double extra too optimistic.
