Southern hoping to announce new nuclear plant this year: CEO

Southern Company, which is building two nuclear reactors in Georgia, is hoping to announce plans by year-end for additional nuclear units of the same design, CEO Tom Fanning told reporters Wednesday.

The company is evaluating six possible sites for additional reactors, including existing plants and greenfield locations, he said on the sidelines of a conference in Washington held by the Bipartisan Policy Center. He declined to say in what state the new units would be located. "I would love to announce by the end of the year a new nuclear [plant] option," Fanning said. "I would propose it would be similar to the Vogtle plant [expansion, which uses Westinghouse] AP1000" reactor units, he said.

Fanning also said in his presentation for the event that Southern is close to announcing its involvement in "a commercial venture in [energy] storage."

He declined to discuss specifics, but told reporters the company is interested in larger-scale power storage options, including compressed air systems. As an example, he said Southern researchers have studied the idea of buying power from Texas at times of negative pricing, storing it using an underground compressed air storage facility in Mississippi or southern Alabama and generating power using a turbine for distribution at times when power prices are higher.
