Europe, as viewed from a greenhouse gas.
There isnt a country in the world thats on track to reduce emissions to the extent needed to keep global warming under 2 degrees Celsius (3.7 Fahrenheit). But for a glimpse of something resembling climate leadership, peer across the pond.
The Climate Change Performance Index [PDF], produced by Germanwatch and Climate Action Network Europe, ranks countries based on their greenhouse gas emissions, emissions-reduction efforts, energy efficiency, renewable energy portfolios, and policies aimed at slowing climate change. Heres the top-10 list from this year. Every country is in Europe:
Denmark
United Kingdom
Portugal
Sweden
Switzerland
Malta
France
Hungary
Ireland
Iceland

(1,553 posts)1. This isn't entirely accurate, ...
perhaps because there was insufficient data provided or other unknown reasons.
The Central American country of Costa Rica was for whatever reason left out of this study. At last count since their stated target of carbon neutral in the early 1920's, they are still on target. 95% of the electrical energy is now provided with renewables, and I believe CR is still on target for carbon neutrality in 2022. That puts them in a hand full of elite nations who are walking the walk, with success, on climate change performance.

(12,022 posts)2. Norway isn't on the list but there's this:
"Norway's Army Tries To Save The World... By Going Vegetarian" : http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/11/20/norway-army-vegetarian_n_4304323.html
"Livestock farming accounts for 18 percent of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation."
it KILLS me that a news org will use a headline like "tries to save the world" for a story like this. People are in so much denial about their diets. And of course corporate mass media will use this chance to teach their readers something as just another chance to mock people who adjust their own life to F'ing reality.
.......anyway....
