"Approximately 182 live animals have been captured to date," Exxon said in a written update from its Mayflower information center. "Fourteen animals of various species have been released and approximately 27 are still being cleaned. The majority of the impacted wildlife has been reptiles, primarily venomous snakes."

(15,480 posts)We know venomous snakes were affected, but the impact on the board members of ExxonMobil is not the issue. What about the wildlife?
Note, there is no mention of how many dead animals were disposed of.

(15,805 posts)This is BS!
An ecosystem that consists of "primarily venomous snakes" cannot exist in nature. Even reptiles require a food source, and that would mean there is a corresponding -- and far larger -- population of small mammals that enable snakes to thrive. And if small mammals are in abundance then the habitat likely supports larger mammals, which in turn would attract other predators ... in other words, like similar areas, the whole interlinked bio-system is at risk due to this toxic tar mess.

(3,596 posts)Venomous snakes are still part of the eco-system. They serve a purpose in the eco-system and their loss should be as concerning as the loss of say birds, rabbits, etc.
The audacity of Exxon to try to pretend their spill is not harming the eco-system is appalling. But this is business in the 21st century.

(70,504 posts)Ecologist here ..... if you poison the environment so as to hurt "the venomous snakes"
you will also hurt other flora and fauna too.
Such as gophers, rabbits, ground nesting owls, native pollinators, frogs, toads,
dragon flies, plants and so on ..... the press spokesman should have vetted his
statement before speaking such stupid crap.
