US Pacific Commander: Climate Change Biggest Threat In Asia-Pacific Region

Navy Admiral Samuel J. Locklear III, the US Pacific Forces top commander, said in an interview recently reported by the Boston Globe newspaper that he considers rising sea levels as the top security threat.

Locklear added that the sea levels would “cripple the security environment, probably more likely than the other scenarios we all often talk about.”

The military official added that he has reached to other military forces, including China and India, calling on them to “get military capabilities aligned [for] when the effects of climate change start to impact these massive population.”

“If it goes bad, you could have hundreds of thousands or millions of people displaced and then security will start to crumble pretty quickly,” Locklear said.
