World's reptiles at risk of extinction (BBC)

By Ella Davies
Reporter, BBC Nature

Almost a fifth of the world's reptile species are at risk of extinction, according to scientists.

Research led by the Zoological Society of London found that the future of 19% of the world's reptiles are threatened.

Conservation experts also confirmed that 47% are vulnerable and highlighted the possible extinction of three species.

Freshwater turtles were also flagged as a considerable concern. The study estimated 50% were at risk of extinction, and 30% of freshwater reptiles are in danger of disappearing as a whole.
***
"With turtles, what's quite often the case is they are affected by harvesting and they're quite often used for food or the pet trade," she told BBC Nature.

First they came for the amphibians, and I did nothing, because I was not an amphibian.
Then they came for the reptiles, and I did nothing ...

And if we had to do it all over again, would we do the same thing, probably. All for the almighty dollar. Until it effects US citizens directly, we somehow don't pay much attention. Some people don't see a problem with the extinction of sharks. They think, Sharks kill people, so it can't be bad if they are gone. I was watching a news cast one night, and they were talking about an intruder in the water. Lo and behold it was a shark. Yes the shark IS the intruder. I just hope being at the age of 52 I don't get to see many extinctions in my lifetime. I can't even imagine people with young babies. What will the world be like for them.

being only 52 you could easily still be here in 2040. I have 2050 to look forward to probably. I can't be anything but horrified by this. When I see pregnant woman and families full of toddlers it just kills me. How can people do this? All the sweet old reasons for making babies, having families, that will all be ridiculous by the end of this century.
