Book Recommendations for Kids?

I have twin 8 year old nephews and a 7 year old niece and would like to give them some books to teach them about taking care of the environment and not wasting resources, etc... There's a lot to be found so I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations of some good ones?

Dr. Suess' "The Lorax" is one of the best

get on the computer much at all yet so they are great at playing outdoors and being able to have hours of fun with sticks, stones and dirt. Looking into this book reminded me of a documentary I've been meaning to watch called Play Again, I think. They took some teenagers out to nature for a while (weeks? months?) and "unplugged" them while they were out there. It shows how they deal with being in nature without their electronic toys and what kind of impact it had on their lives.

Anyway, I'm looking for books more along the line of why we need to recycle and not waste paper and water, and why we need to take care of the planet.

Appreciate the response though.

Oh, I don't know if they've read The Lorax. I'll ask about that. Was thinking of the movie Wall-E too but I'm giving them some live action movies to get them to see some non-animated movies.

Thinking more of straight ahead books that teach about recycling, not wasting etc, that the planet is an ecosystem that needs to be taken care of.

It says it's for young adults and children. I didn't read it until I was almost 40 but I know I would have liked it when I was very young, I loved to read. Maybe 8's a little young for it but they'll have it when they're 10 too!

but the "My Side of the Mountain" series was a real favorite when I was around 9.

I wouldn't even try to go with books that are overtly "environmental," but more books that teach a love of the outdoors.

Hello. I know kids love books which contain a pictures which speaks a story entirely. There are many books available online but in my observation today love to read books on either computers or on kindle. I recently buy a book Samuel and the Pirates from http://www.amazon.com/Samuel-and-the-Pirates-ebook/dp/B00AKCO8JC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1355873677&sr=8-1&keywords=samuel+and+the+pirates which is the best book for kids from age range 3 to 10. The best part is it an adventurous and available for kindle also. I am sure that your kid will surely love this book after reading it.
