Fukushima Update: Hysterical Reports Dropping to Safe Levels

"FUKUSHIMA-DAICHI, JAPAN - In the wake of the March 2011 tsunami and reactor meltdown, residents in this seaside town still grapple with the complexities of life that increased levels of radiation bring. But other recent data show signs of promise: hysteria about the disaster has dropped to levels which are safe enough to allow residents to turn on their televisions and radios again.

'This Arnie Gundersen guy...where did he come from?' asks Hitomi Nagachi, a local resident. "We turned on our televisions and there he was again, day after day. It was scaring the crap out of us.'

Mr. Nagachi is referring to commentator Arnie Gundersen of the Fairewinds Institute, a nuclear watchdog agency, who for months provided anxious commentary in media reports which stoked the fears of residents, but which others believe exaggerated potential dangers. 'How long did we hear the cores were going to melt through rock to seawater? Thank God he seems to have gone away, and I can watch my game shows again. But I realize the hysteria can return at any moment...we live in fear.'"
